Hublot and Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, one of the most important cultural icons of our time, have joined together in a creative collaboration resulting in two stunning timepieces in 18k yellow gold or ceramic as part of the newly unveiled Shawn Carter Collection.
The decision to collaborate was an obvious one – Carter’s relationship with the watchmaker has long been lauded through his frequent references to the brand in his lyrics and his admiration for the luxury watchmaker’s bold designs and masterful innovation.
Brought to life through the artist’s pop up installation within Barneys’, “A New York Holiday,” Mr. Carter chose Hublot to represent his iconic style through two custom timepieces from the luxury watchmaker’s Classic Fusion line. The limited edition collection will be available exclusively at Barneys New York and at select Hublot boutiques worldwide beginning November 20th. Following the holiday installation, the timepieces will live on as part of the newly minted Collection.
For 2014, Hublot is supplying the Shiny Dial in both black and really white. Here is actually the first time that I’ve noticed a white-dialed Classic Fusion and while I was not certain what to make of it at first, it quickly grew on me. Hublot offers each dial with either the titanium or gold instance, and I think that it looks pretty sharp. Hublot has very much been a “dark dialed” brand but in white I think that it adds a mild freshness that should not be dismissed. It’s likewise true that the black dialed version is much more timeless, and more suitable for day and night wear, but I happen to believe the glistening white dial, especially mixed with the gold case and brown strap is still rather handsome. One area that people have a tendency to harp on a lot are the bezel screws. The signature “H” screws are practical and separately screw into the case. Audemars Piguet for instance makes certain that the screws all line up perfectly “pointing” to the dial. Hublot screws are somewhat more screwed in and made to just sit where they may after being tightened. Would the design function better when the screws all look absolutely symmetrical? I don’t know, to be honest. It is not something which has bothered me, but I can sympathize with people that are irked but the natural assortment of the screw heads. With an appealing in-house made mechanical motion and “glossy” presentation, the Hublot Classic Fusion 42mm Ultra Thin Shiny Dial collection represents an apex of simple, attractive Hublot-style dress watch. If you are not into Hublot at all, these will probably not do it for you, but if you have been fond of Hublot because the 1980s and feel that the modern bits do not fit your personality, then grey Fusion versions like this are a great bet. The include black rubber lined brown or black alligator straps.
The Shawn Carter by Hublot Classic Fusion X Replica 45mm wide timepieces, both on black alligator straps, fall on the high end of the Barneys collaboration, with a yellow 18K gold timepiece and a black ceramic version. Inside the watch is an Hublot made ultra thin HUB1300 manually wound mechanical movement. The starburst emblem on the dial is the official logo of the Shawn Carter collection.
Twenty-five percent of all sales from the Barneys collaboration will benefit the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the Foundation is a New York-based charity, which awards post-secondary scholarships to students facing socio-economic hardships. hublot.com
